Syracuse-
All-America Boss Looking For Forward |
Angling To Secure Conaty From
Brooklyn At Session Tomorrow
Officials of the American
Basket Ball League open a business session in Rochester tomorrow, and Harry
Markowitz, part owner and business manager of the All-Americas, will be one of
the busiest executives at the gathering. Markowitz’s chief interest lies in
securing a new court performer for his Syracuse club. He has strings out for
“Red” Conaty of the Brooklyn Visitation and last night was confident that he
could persuade James O’Brien, the president of the loop, to allow the player to
come here. For the youthful magnate is carrying around the opinion that one
more veteran player will just about ‘make’ the All-America combination one of
the most formidable in the league. He feels that Holman, Barry, Meehan and
Sullivan can hold their own against any sort of competition but he well
realized the team needs another forward to carry the load in there with Barry.
Rumors have floated in the last few days that Brooklyn was preparing to sever
relations with Conaty, but the cause is a mystery since the redhead rates high
up in the list of scorers and is in splendid playing shape at the present time.
The All-America band swings into Cleveland for a scuffle with the Rosenblums
tonight and Monday and Tuesday are slated for appearances in Fort Wayne. Friday
night they come home to renew hostilities with the Fort Wayne outfit and
Markowitz is hopeful that Conaty will be in readiness to be dropped into that
encounter. |

Syracuse- Syracuse Pro Club Invades Fort Wayne |
Plays Tonight And Tomorrow In
Indiana City- Lose In Cleveland
Fort Wayne, IN, Dec 30-
Syracuse’s pro basket ball team- the All-Americas- arrived here early this
afternoon from Cleveland, OH, where they were defeated by the Rosenblums last
night, 26 to 20, in a hard fought battle, and ‘Red’ Kearns, captain and
spokesman for the visiting party, declared the club was in splendid condition
and carried the confidence to beat the Fort Wayne band not only in tonight’s
game by a decisive score but to repeat in tomorrow night’s performance and make
a clean sweep of the series. Friday the same teams come together again in a
battle in Syracuse. With Meehan out of the lineup in the Rosey contest, Tommy
Allen took over the pivot post and turned in a splendid job, but loss of
shooting skill at the 15-foot mark cost the Syracusans a victory. The
All-Americas outscored the Clevelanders from the floor, 10 baskets to 8, but
the Rosenblums caged 10 free throws while Syracuse did not tally a point via
the full route. Holman was the leading basket shooter of the night dropping
four from the floor through the netting. The score:
CLEVELAND: P. Barry, lf
(3-0-6), Skurnick, rf (2-2-6), Lapchick, c (0-3-3), Husta, lg (2-1-5), Dehnert,

Fight To Land Brooklyn Ace
Proves Futile; Owners Markson And Markowitz Draw Promise Of Help; Solons Dodge
Issue; Murphy Fails In War Against Visitations At Rochester Meeting
The fireworks expected to
develop at the meeting of the American professional basket ball league magnates
in Rochester yesterday failed to materialize and Owners Asher Markson and Harry
Markowitz of the All-America franchise returned to Syracuse this morning
without “Red” Conaty whom they expected to land off the Brooklyn Visitation
roster. However, the Syracusans have been promised a man or two to be delivered
in the next few days. Deciding that matters were running along smoothly in the
circuit the solons took action on the New York Celtic proposition alone,
agreeing to close up other business at a later date. By a heavy vote it was
agreed to toss out the 10 games played by the New York team before they
disbanded from the records, but the ruling failed to disturb the league
leaders. Rochester draws a lucky break by the ruling, jumping into contending
third place position with 10 victories and eight defeats. Cleveland has a
two-game advantage over the Centrals with 12 wins against six defeats and
Brooklyn slides into second with 11 triumphs ad seven setbacks. Each
aggregation has six games more to play before the curtain rolls down on the
first half of the race on Jan 15. The All-America owners waged a merry fight
for Conaty’s services, but James J. O’Brien, president found the Visitation
heads unwilling to let the crack forward go at this time, with a pennant in
sight and Markson and Markowitz had to be satisfied with a promise that help
would be forthcoming. When the pair realized that Conaty was slipping from
their grasp they filed claim for the services for either Whitey Wickhorst at
present a member of the Chicago Bruins and listed one the fastest men in
professional basket ball or Frank Shimek, owned by the Fort Wayne outfit.
Managers of the Chicago and Fort Wayne clubs appeared willing to let the
players come into the Syracuse fold, but they explained the directors of their
respective clubs must pass on the sale before the transactions could go
through. In all probability one of the men will be on hand Friday night for the
All-Americas’ game against Fort Wayne at the Armory. Johnny Murphy, boss of the
Centrals took a licking in his fight to have the Brooklyn Visitations ousted
from the league if they did not move to another court for their home games.
Murphy put forth the argument that Prospect Hall where the Visitations
entertain is unsuitable and that visiting players and officials were
dissatisfied with the handling of the crowds. The moguls tabled the matter
after a brief conference and Murphy was obliged to let matters rest for the
time being. The All-Americas absorbed a bad beating in Fort Wayne last night,
Davey Banks and Company garnering 32 points against 17 for the Syracusans. Nat
Holman continued on his shooting rampage, caging four baskets but Glasco who
was assigned the task of guarding Marty Barry made a good job of it and the
flashy speedboy went scoreless for the night. The All-Americas are without the
services of ‘Stretch’ Meehan and Phil Schiffer on the jaunt, Tommy Allen and
Red Kearns holding down their berths. Another game with Fort Wayne is on tap
for tonight. The score:
FORT WAYNE: Banks, lf (3-2-8),
Saunders, rf (3-1-7) Chadwick, c (3-1-7) Kowniczyk, c (0-0-0), Shimek, (3-3-9),
Glasco, rg (0-1-1) TOTALS (11-10-32). SYRACUSE: Holman, rg (4-0-8), Kearns lg
(1-0-2), Allen, c (0-1-1), Sullivan, rf (2-2-6), Barry, lf (0-0-0) TOTALS
(7-3-17).
Score at half time- Fort Wayne
12, Syracuse 8.
